Anatomy of a hatch pattern.

If you've never opened a .pat file before, the deliverable can look unfamiliar — a text file full of numbers, not the image you might expect. Here's what's actually inside, and why it works the way it does.

What is a hatch pattern?

A hatch pattern is a repeating geometric design that fills an area in an AutoCAD drawing. Designers use them to represent materials — a brick pattern for a brick wall, a stone pattern for a paver, and so on — so that anyone reading the drawing immediately understands the material being specified.

What is a .pat file?

A .pat file is the file format AutoCAD uses to define hatch patterns. It's a plain text file containing mathematical definitions — angles, origins, and offsets — that AutoCAD reads and uses to draw the pattern on demand. One file can contain a single pattern or a whole library.

Why isn't it just an image?

Because hatches are vector-based, not raster. The .pat file is a set of instructions that tells AutoCAD how to draw the pattern at any scale, at any rotation, in any color. An image would pixelate at print scale; a .pat file renders cleanly whether you're at 1/4" or 1:50,000.
